I woke up this morning to the loud sound of a minaret speaker outside. It was raining. Drizzling really, but the outlook for the day's weather didn't look so good. I saw Altan Yilmaz walking along the sidewalk , pushing his coffee cart, picked up a quarter and chased him down so I could grab a cup. It tasted a bit watery, but it's better than having to make it myself. Maybe I'll go visit Dave and pick up some meat for dinner.

You know, there isn't much to do in this town... I just look out my window, talk to Edna J. Knox about the tenants and eat my food in my apartment; occasionally, I visit the antiques store across the street. I usually don't partake in their wares, but it's lonely around here.
//
Later. It's raining harder now, some sleet too. I don't look forward to the leaks that will probably happen in some of the other apartments; I don't want to have to fix them (I thought that was supposed to be Edna's job, but she isn't actually that handy with a wrench, or spackle for that matter). I wonder what Ethan is doing down the hall with that new guy Sam - it's gloomy out and Ethan seems most active on these days. I wonder if they're gay? I mean, Ethan has had tons of guys come to his apartment... don't always see them leave, but they stay for a while at a time.

People keep knocking on my door now. The power is out and they all want to know why. Hell if I know - I don't understand anything that happens in this dump of a town. Hopefully it will come back on soon though so I don't have to deal with these people all night. These people, this town... I don't know how we all came together to be what we are, but there's some underlying meaning to all of it. We're at the edge of hell and I can't figure out what brought us all here. For now though, I have to go explain to Edith Evans that it's not my fault her power blew.

gee thanks :P
ReplyDeleteSuddenly the sound of sirens filled the air and Altan shivered - that noise was still to familiar to him. A fire truck whizzed down the street, its horn blaring, its garish lights illuminating the windows of the buildings it passed. Altan moved away from his window, having no desire to know the cause of this disturbance. There was a knock on his door - thanks be to Allah! Someone wanted some coffee. Altan shuffled across the room and opened the door with a flourish.
ReplyDelete"Care for kahve, Ms. Nox?" The repair woman was holding a pen and notepad and gave him a look.
"The super needs to know if you have any leaks." Altan's smile slipped slowly off his face and he sighed, disappointed.
"Oh, yes, well, the window is -"
"Got it."
Edna walked off without another word, making a mark on her paper. Altan stood there for a minute, disheartened, before shutting the door. No one needed him, no one wanted his coffee. What a miserable Monday.
Ethan sat on the roof of the building, his legs dangling over the edge. The rain plastered his hair to his head and reduced his cigarette to a soggy clump of paper. Mercutio squirmed in Ethan's pocket. He didn't like getting wet. Ethan reached into his pocket and petted the mouse. With an indignant squeak, Mercutio sank his teeth into Ethan's thumb. He didn't draw blood.
ReplyDeleteSo Day wanted to know why Ethan walked the roof at night...
Ethan sat and watched as the city was thrown into darkness, the humming of electricity giving way to silence, beautiful silence. He thought about a poem he once heard somewhere.
"A storm is coming, Frank says. A storm that will swallow the children. And I will deliver them from the kingdom of pain. I will deliver the children back to their doorsteps. And send the monsters back to the underground. I'll send them back to a place where no one else can see them. Except for me. Because..." Because why? Ethan couldn't remember any more.
